Brief History
The Blair Family YMCA is a non-profit, tax exempt 501(c)(3) autonomous organization affiliated with the YMCA of the USA and the International YMCA movement. The mission of the Blair Family YMCA is “To put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for Blair and the surrounding communities regardless of ability to pay”. Any person can join the Blair Family YMCA or participate in YMCA programs regardless of age, race, gender, religion or ability to pay.
The YMCA has over a 160 year history of service to communities across the United States. The Blair Family YMCA was organized in 1994. However, the YMCA had been in the making since 1980 when the city identified this need through a community development study.
The Blair Family YMCA was organized in October, 1994
The YMCA received its national charter September 1, 1995
The YMCA’s first program was offered May 1995
The first facility was opened in May 1996
Bill Wilson donated 16 acres for the future sight of the YMCA October 1997
The YMCA kicked-off a $4.5 million capital campaign May 1999
Current Blair Family YMCA dedicated and opened July 27, 2002
